Why you should learn to code

Whether you realise it or not, we all rely on code. Our lives are effected by code in many ways – from the the code in your digital clock, your television, your car, your smartphone –  all the way up to complex systems such as airplane navigation systems or how utility companies deliver electricity to your house – they are all built using code. It effects us everyday of our lives. Even though you may not see it, code is an important part of our lives.

What is code?

Code is what makes up computer programs. It’s used to build software for every computing device we ever use, from your internet browser to your smartphone. Huge numbers of devices function thanks to code, whether it’s your playstation, your SatNav, the websites your read, the apps you use – including digital watches or home alarms. More than ever we rely on code.

Coding is the language of the future. It consists of various types of programming “languages” such as HTML, CSS, Python, C++, Javascript, Ruby On Rails, etc. By learning how to code you will be able to make your own software – whether it’s a computer game, smartphone app or interactive website. For example, the website Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg in his university dorm room – built using code such as HTML and PHP. Have you ever wanted to create a website like Facebook? If so, then make sure you know how to code, and digitally speaking, you’ll be able to create pretty much anything you want.
